History of the Firestone Building in South Gate, CA

The facility of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in South Gate began in 1927–28, built on a 40-acre former bean field as the company’s first production facility outside Akron, Ohio.

In its early “establishment” phase, the plant produced automobile tires, and quickly expanded through the 1929 and 1930s additions to meet the booming Los Angeles auto-industry market. During and after World War II, the site entered a “diversification and growth” phase: it added major additions in 1942, 1951 and 1955, and even manufactured guided-missile equipment in the Cold War era.

Finally, in its “decline and closure” phase, the westward shifts of manufacturing, layoffs in the 1970s and early 1980s, and changing industrial patterns led to the plant’s closure around 1980 and subsequent redevelopment of the site.
